www.fs.fed.us/conf/rec/fow/20041130-fow.shtml With almost 76 miles of trail to explore, Georgia’s section of the Appalachian Trail presents a challenge to visitors no matter what time of year you wish to hike. Numerous access points provide an almost endless combination of short or long hikes ranging from the two-mile round trip hike from the parking area off US Forest Service Road 42 to the southern terminus on Springer Mountain to multi-day and night hikes along our section of this famous National Scenic Trail that stretches over 2000 miles from Georgia To Maine. As visitors wind their way through the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains they will take in spectacular views from the top of some of Georgia’s highest peaks like Blood Mountain (4,461 feet) and Tray Mountain (4,430 ft) and descend into valleys where the sound of streams and the rustle of leaves replace the normal sounds of everyday life. Unique stops along the way include the stone shelter on Blood Mountain built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in 1934 and the Walsi-Yi Shelter near Neel’s Gap off US Route 19/129. The Blood Mountain Shelter is a two-room stone shelter that is also listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The original Walsi-Yi building was a log cabin constructed in the early 1900s by a logging company and was renovated and expanded by the CCC in 1933-34. The stone breezeway attached to the building is the only place along the entire Appalachian Trail that is covered by a man-made structure. More detailed information on the Appalachian Trail in Georgia and directions to many of the parking areas can be found on the Georgia Appalachian Trail Club website. Information on the entire trail can be obtained from the Appalachian Trail Conference website.
